Video from the Cyber Risk Awards: An actuarial opinion, rapped

By Chad Hemenway, Advisen

There’s an old joke that goes: An accountant is someone who wanted to be an actuary, but didn’t have the personality for it.

There could be a spike in accountants if wannabe actuaries run into Jon Laux, because he possesses personality in excess. (That’s one way to interpret the joke, at least.)

Laux (J-ON), head of cyber analytics at Aon, performed a rap, “99 Problems with Cyber” at Advisen’s Cyber Risk Awards on June 6. Yes, he rapped. You can click the picture below to watch him “spit lines ripped from the headlines.”

Laux was one act among several from the cyber community that make the awards a must-attend event. Well, besides the possibility of receiving an actual award, of course.

Most of the audience may have been too stunned by a rapping actuary (we do not blame you) to realize the brilliance of the lyrics. For this reason, and to amplify the warranted FOMO of those who were not there, we present the video. Take a close look at the words, which are somewhat critical and cautionary. Don’t worry – as it turns out the bit about spitting is a metaphor. No raincoats required.

After you watch and shake off the astonishment, take a look at a list of the award winners and see photos of your colleagues and competitors, all cleaned up and looking smart.
